Description

In this lesson the students study about the past simple tense of irregular verbs along with the past adverbs of time

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of making sentences in the past tense in the context of Five days in Istanbul

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make them fluent and accurate in speaking and writing in using the past simple tense.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will welcome the Ss and very quickly checking their names. T sticks the picture of a tourist in Istanbul on the W/b and ask them : Do you know him. It was the picture that I had already used in my previous teaching.They will say : yes we know him he is a tourist.Then I will draw a line in the middle of the w/b and tell them that he is not a tourist now.Then the T presents the day which will be Wednesday 24/07/2013 in the right part of the w/b and in the left T will write 24/07/2012 to present the past.Then T asks them :What did he do on his last holiday? Then the students will answer.If they are using the wrong tense the T will correct them.

Exposure (5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will stick the pictures of the TL on the W/b but on the right side of the w/b and and elicit the verbs in the present tense,then again T says and shows the past tense by hand letting them know what these verbs are in the past tense.

Highlighting (2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T repeats the present and the past tens of the TL over and over and asks the Ss to repeat them.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T goes to the pictures again and asks the Ss : What dıd he do last year? Ss answer the question,then he removes the picture from the right side and sticks them on the left side and writes the word underneath each.Then they repeat them after the teacher.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T removes all of the pictures and asks three of them to come and stick them over the related verb.After that the teacher will give them HO1 to draw lines to connect the words to their equivalents in the past tense. Then checks them.After that he gives them HO2 where they have to write the past tense of each verb.After that they can check their answers from the cd.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T gives them HO3 and asks them to change these sentences into past tense in their group.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T puts the Ss in pairs and asks them to talk about their last holiday.They are required to talk with the verbs presented to them.He moves around and checks them.
