Reading and speaking practice / Millionaires
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

After warming up with a short discussion of the overall subject, students will be reading a text about the habits of certain millionaires. Exercises that refer to the text will help them obtain better scan reading skills. I will probe their comprehension of expressions with a multiple choice test modeled after the popular show "Who wants to be a millionaire?".

Materials

Abc Millionaires

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about millionaires.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice lexis related to money.

Procedure

Warm up (6-10 minutes) • Getting sts attention, language immersion, speaking practice, activating background knowledge

I'll start the course with visual cues pertaining to big sums of money and those who own it, introducing some turkish millionaires. We will briefly discuss how to become a millionaire and whether the students expect or have wishes for it to happen to them. In groups, they will think about the millionaire stories that they know. I will introduce the word "generous" by asking the student what they would think of someone who gave them a large sum of money and contrasting it with the word "selfish", which is later used in the text.

Matching game & reading (6-10 minutes) • Scan reading for information

In the next step, they will be asked to match the adjectives "good", "bad" and "generous" to the protagonists of the following text. I will write both the names and the words on the WB, demoing the task before handing out the text. Some vocabulary may need to be clarified, such as "disabled" or "caravan", for which I have prepared visual material. To see if they caught the gist of the text, we will briefly talk about their sympathies for the millionaires mentioned.

Money expressions (8-10 minutes) • Scan reading / Reviewing lexis

We will do the first step of this exercise together with the whole class, to make sure that everybody understands what is asked of them. Then everybody will underline the expressions for themselves, re-reading the text as they go. I will ask them to write some of them on the whiteboard. To see if they get the meaning of the phrases, I intend to include them in a "Who wants to be a millionaire?"-styled matching game.

Lexis exercise 2 (8-10 minutes) • Reviewing vocabulary

Everyone fills in the blanks for themselves, then compares with their neighbour and reports to the class. After this, they will team up in pairs to ask and answer the questions together. Again, we will hear some answers with the whole class.
