Description

In this lesson, students will learn the negative and question form of "there is and there are". They will practise asking and speaking about neighbourhood. They also should be aware of using 'any' with negative and question.

Main Aims

  • Grammar: To provide clarification and practice of question and negative form of "there is/are".

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking: To provide fluency. students will practise speaking skill through the context of "a good neighbourhood".

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Welcome the students teacher will put some items from the classroom on the desk and remind students of the previous lesson "there is and there are". students will say: There is ............ on the desk. There are .............on the desk. Then teacher removes item by atem and try to elicit the negative form from the students. If they don't know, T will do one as a model.

Exposure (9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher draws two houses on the board and sticks the pictures of house items, some of them in Mike's house and others in Ahmad's house. Teacher says a sentence as a model with "any", eg. There aren't any sofas in Mike's house. Give students two minutes to talk about the two houses. After that, Teacher asks: Is there........? Are there any...........s? Pair work: students ask and answer about the items in the houses.

Clarification (7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target language

Pair work: Teacher asks Ss to rewrite the sentences using the symbols in brackets ( ). Teacher clarifies the symbols, - for negative, + for positive, ? for a question, and give a model on the whiteboard. Give students 4 minutes to do it.

Controlled Practice (7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher asks orally about some places around here; eg. Is there a hotel near here? Students answer..... Are there any clothes shops around here? Yes,..... No,...... Try to elicit from students the answers from students. Pair work: students complete the answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher writes on thde board: There aren't TVs in the classroom. Are there TVs in the classroom? T asks students to use 'any' in these two sentences to elicit from students. Pair work: Handout 2 will be given to students to do it. Ss have 2 minutes.

Free Practice (7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Group work: a model will be done, a teacher with a student; Are there any shops? Yes, there are. No, there aren't. Students will have five minutes to practise asking and answering about neighbourhood.

Perfect (2 minutes) • Error Correction

To provide feedback on students' prodution and use of language
