  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Olympic child sports stars

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency using preceeding lesson's grammar and lexis in the context of child sports stars
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Dominique Moceanu to further introduce the context of child sports stars

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

This is a video of a gymnist that EVERYONE loved in America in the mid-1990's. Her name is Dominique Moceanu. I remember watching these Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Take a look at this video and tell me how old you think she is. She is one of the Fabulous Seven in the Golden Age of Gymnastics. But, today, we will look at what it is like to be a young star athlete like Dominique.

Reading and Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Exercise 1: As she got a little older and more famous, after the 1996 Olympics, this story hit the news. Read this short summary of what happened to her. Read the article alone and circle the answer you think is correct. Ss will compare with a fellow student. T will then take a 'poll' to see if everyone thought it was 3, the correct answer. Exercise 2: Teacher will ask the two questions to the group and elicit a couple answers. Then Ss will talk in pairs to come up with some answers. T tells the students they will be asked one of these questions again at the end of the lesson.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Before the teacher plays the audio, T tells the students what they will be listening for. 1. Which two sports do they talk about? 2. Does the psycologiset think the child star phenomenon is a positive one? why or why not? Students will talk in pairs to answer the questions. Students will then be nominated to give their thoughts. Teacher will provide appropriate FB.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ok, we are going to listen to the interview again and this time, you will put the points in order. T reads them aloud first to the students. Then, gives them to the students to look at a ask any words they don't understand. T gives any feedback and elicits any meanings from them. Ss listen again, try to put them in order while they are listening. Then check with a partner, (maybe put them on slips to be put in order somehow? Then check with a partner. then check in groups. T asks were there any differences? anything we need to talk about? Answer key: Sports stars are getting younger and younger It is important for tennis players to be successful before they turn sixteen. First child sports stars appeared in the 1970's Child sports stars can have health problems when they get older. Child sports stars do not have a normal childhood. Sometimes, it is the parents of the sports star who get the money. IF there are many mistakes, re-listen to the clip.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ok, now, what do you think? I'm asking you the same question again. Do you think that winning an Olympic medal is worth all those sacrifices? Would you train your children if they showed great promise? With a partner, answer these questions. Try to encourage students to remember vocabulary from previous lessons and using the passive tenses and incorporate them into their speaking part. T elicites a couple examples from students, and could add a couple examples (see Lang. Analysis Sheet). T, elicits what the students thought about it and T provides FB on what they say.
