TP2 Problems, Dilemmas and Advice
Intermediate (B1) level

Description

This lesson focuses on integrated skills of speaking and listening. The students will talk about problems and dilemmas using the opening reading text which is aimed at intensive reading. They have to come to an agreement about the reading that whose problem is the most challenging and then share personal relevant experience. The lesson is followed by a listening activity in which Dave and Derek are talking to each other and Derek is sharing his problem. Since it's rather a long text, they will listen to almost one third of the text in the first setting to get Derek's problem and in the second part of the task which is aimed at specific information, students will go through the whole file doing a gap filling task. The lesson is closed with a semi controlled/freer activity where students have to give advice to Derek. It is recommended to provide some expression of advice at this stage but care must be taken not to be so detailed.

Main Aims

  • To practice speaking through intensive reading a text about crossroads in life. Listening for specific information.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (4-6 minutes) • To Elicit the word "Crossroad" and test what the students know about the topic

Class starts with asking students to say a synonym for dilemma using the picture. We will listen to a short extract from scent of a woman where Al Pacino talks about crossroads in life. If Ss did not know the word, this can be used as a discovery task to find out the synonym for dilemma if they had already guessed the word this video will be used to initiate some talk on the topic. Prossible CCQs for Crossroads: Is there only one way? Is it easy to choose one? Are both choices good?

Pre Reading/Speaking task-Discussion Starter (5-6 minutes) • Activating Schemata, Practice on fluency in speaking

The "Discussion Starters" handout will be distributed and Ss in pairs will have to discuss the questions.

Feedback (1-2 minutes) • Sharing Groups' ideas with the whole class

Ss will be chosen randomly to give a brief report about the kind of problem solver their partners are.

Reading and Discussion (6-8 minutes) • To practice integrated skills of reading and speaking. Primarily to practice fluency

Ss will read 3 short texts each written by a different person talking about the crossroads they are facing. They will be given enough time to read and comprehend thoroughly then they have to speak to their partner discussing who has a more serious scenario and why.

Freer Speking Practice (4-6 minutes) • Develope fluency in speaking as well as practicing language of advising

A set of two questions are offered by the book which can turn into a role play task. One S in each pair will be the consultant and the other is client who will visit the consultant asking for help on his problem. Other than this Ss could simply discuss the questions in pair and exchange personal exprience.

Lead in to listening (1-2 minutes) • To predict the content of the listening

Ss will have to look @ the photo and guess the answer to T's questions. Where are they? What do you think they are talking about? Do they both look happy? What do you think is wrong with the unhappy person?

Gist Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide Ss with less challenging listening task

Ss will listen to only one third of the text up to "... long time at my age." and then they have to explain what Derek's problem is. ICQs: Do we listen to the whole conversation? [No] Do you need to understand every word? [No] What do you have to talk about after listening?[Derek's Problem]

Specific Information (7-9 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information

Ss will have to answer some gap filling questions. Let them know they do NOT have to understnd every detail of the text. They will check their answers in pairs after the text. LET THEM READ THE QUESTIONS IN 30SEC BEFORE THE LISTENING STARTS. After this Ss in pairs check their answers, if it is needed the recording will be replayed. For feeddback S come to the board to write down the answers.

Post Listening / Identifying phrases (1-2 minutes) • To practice skimming technique

Ss will go through the script of the audio file which is printed on the other side of their handout, and have to higlight any phrase that is used to give advice. This must be done vey quickly in a very competative manner among groups.
