Main Aims

  • To give students practice in listening for specific information in the context of first meetings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review question forms and to give students freer speaking practise

Procedure

Lead in (5-7 minutes) • Relax the students and build a little bit of energy in the room

I will start by double checking they know my name and quickly follow by asking them about which game shows they are watching and what they like about those game shows. I will then ask them if they know the game show "Ben Bilmem Esim Bilir" and explain that we will be listening to game show a little bit similar to that.

Listening Exercise - General (10-15 minutes) • To give the students listening practice and make sure they

I will give the HO of the true or false questions. I will give the students around 30 seconds to read through them and then in order to check understanding I will ask CCQ to make sure. I expect this bit to only take a minute or so. I will then play the recording once. While the recording is playing I will write a-f on the board ready for the answers to be written next to them. Once the recording is complete I will ask if they managed to get all the answers and ask if they would like to listen a second time. If they need it I will play the recording a second time. I will then ask someone to come forward to answer question a on the board, and check to see if the whole class agrees with the answer before moving on to the next question, if the answer is false I will ask what the true answer is.

Deductive Writing - Question forms (5-7 minutes) • To help the students use the question forms

I will put the students into pairs, give HO2 and explain that they need to, using the given clues, form the proper questions for questions 2 - 6 in their pairs. I will check they understand by doing question 2 as a whole class. I will give them around 2 minutes to complete this followed by checking the answers as a group and write the correct questions on the board.

Listening Exercise 2 (5-7 minutes) • To give the students additional listening practice

I will chest HO2 and explain that they are listening to Rosie's answers and they have to select the correct one for each question. I will check that they understand by asking whose answers they are listening to. Then I will play the recording through once. I will ask if they have managed to answer all the questions. If they need it I will play the tape a second time. After the second time I will get them to quickly check their answers with the person sitting next to them and then go through the questions as a whole class getting them to shout the answers out, including the sentence, and ask if the whole class agrees.

Listening Exercise 3 (5-7 minutes) • Even more Listening practice!

I will chest HO2 again and explain that we are now paying attention to Davids answers and if David says the same thing as rosie they must circle the tick if not they must circle the cross. I will check their understanding by asking who we are listening too and what they must do if the answer is the same. I will then play the recording and ask if they all managed to answer all the questions. If they need it I will play the tape a second time. I will then go through the answers as a whole class.

Everyones a Winner! (3-5 minutes) • Get the students to embrace the competition aspect of the lesson

I will ask the students to figure out how many points Rosie and David scored, I will follow this with a very short discussion about if the students think David and Rosie know each other well

Free Practise / Role Playing (11-15 minutes) • To get the students to come up with their own questions and practice using them

I will then reiterate that I am married and get them to ask me questions about the first time I met my Wife, Duygu. When they have come up with and agreed on 5 questions, I will get everyone to stand up. I will ask who is in a relationship. Everyone in a relationship will move to the left side of the room and everyone else to the right. They must then find a partner from the opposite side, so each pair has one single and one relationship bound person. They will then ask the relationship bound person the questions on the board. I will walk round the room and see how they are doing making sure they are speaking English and interacting with each other.

And Finally (1-5 minutes) • To close the session with a group interaction and hopefully have a bit of fun

I will close the session by asking all the single people to say if they think their partner knows their spouse well or not and ask them if they think they will remember the answers to these questions when they get into a relationship. I will also quickly ask them if they think it is important in a relationship to remember these things, who is generally better at it Men or Women??
