Description

In this lesson students enhance their vocabulary through speaking about an interview and reading a text about tips to help them do well at interviews. The lessons starts with two photos which students are supposed to discuss and guess what kind of interviews they are. This is followed by discussing about their own interview experiences and selecting the expressions about what should/shouldn't be done before and during an interview by working in pairs. finally the students discuss about what they should do before and during an interview.

Main Aims

  • To provide of interview terms in the context of hobbies, interests, daily life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about "tips to help you do well at interviews" in the context of getting prepared for an interview

Procedure

Stage 1 (5-6 minutes) • To get Ss to observe photos and guess the type of interview.

Get Ss to look at the photos on pages 14 & 15. Get them to decide which type of interview they are from the list Ask them to tell their reasons for their decisions.

Stage 2 (3-4 minutes) • To elicit the meaning of 'the real you'.

Ask them to describe the statement 'the real you'.

Stage 3 (5-6 minutes) • To encourage the Ss talk about interview

Put the Ss in groups of 3 and get them to look at the questions in ex. 1.b. Nominate 1 student from each group to provide feedback.

Stage 4 (5-6 minutes) • To get Ss brainstorm dos and donts of job interview

Continue to work in pairs. Get Ss to find discuss what should/shouldn't be done at interviews.

Stage 5 (3-4 minutes) • To pre-teach some expressions regarding an interview

Pre-teach 'show enthusiasm', 'answer briefly', 'shake hands firmly', 'send references', 'dress smartly', 'speak clearly' and 'avoid eye contact'.

Stage 6 (4-6 minutes) • To get Ss match the expressions

Get Ss in 3s to see if their suggestions are in the list in 2a. Write the expressions in the box on the board. Ask Ss to match them with 'should do', shouldn't do' and 'might do before an interview'.

Stage 7 (5-7 minutes) • To get Ss speak about interview using target vocabulary

Get Ss read '5 tips to help you do well at interviews' and ask them about getting an interview at Harvard University. Elicit their suggestions to do before and during an interview.
