Description

In this lesson, students will improve their listening and speaking skills. The lesson starts with a quick brainstorm about dos and don'ts for job interviews. With the pre-thought vocabulary, they will listen to three interviews and do the exercises from the course book Speak Out. Finally, they will learn expressions that introduce a question and expressions that introduce an opinion. They will improve their speaking skills by practicing a dialogue that includes the expressions they learned.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about job interviews in the context of dos, don'ts, and terminology.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a discussion and a dialogue in the context of job interviews.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead In) (5-7 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and teach dos and don'ts for job interviews and teach vocabulary.

- quick open class brainstorm of dos and don'ts for job interviews. - teach the words 'interviewer' and 'interviewee'. - Has anyone been in a job interview before?

Stage 2 (Vocabulary) (2-3 minutes) • to provide new vocabulary that they will be hearing in the listening they will listen on the next stage.

- pass out vocabulary HO's for students to read - elicit new words by giving examples

Stage 3 (Listening) (6-7 minutes) • to provide a controlled listening practice for specific information

- tell Ss they are going to listen to three interviews. - get Ss to listen and complete ex.4a alone. - pair them into groups and check.

Stage 4 (Listening) (9-10 minutes) • to provide a controlled listening

- ask Ss to work in pairs to try to answer ex.4b from what they remember. - listen again to check. - play again if necessary.

Stage 5 (Grammar) (2-3 minutes) • to teach the usage of the auxiliary 'do'

- board the sentence "Actually I do have a query". - get Ss to discuss why the auxiliary 'do' is used in this sentence. - give examples.

Stage 6 (Grammar) (2-3 minutes) • to teach expressions that introduce a question

- pair Ss. - ask Ss to look at ex.5a and underline the expressions that introduce a question. - ask volunteer Ss to come to board to underline.

Stage 7 (Grammar) (3-4 minutes) • to teach expressions that introduce an opinion

- ask Ss to look at ex.5b. - pair Ss. - ask Ss to underline expressions that introduce an opinion. - ask volunteer Ss to come to board to underline.

Stage 8 (Grammar) (2-3 minutes) • to elicit the expressions that introduce questions and opinions

- project p.128 - drill the sentences

Stage 9 (Error Correction) (5-6 minutes) • to teach the right usage of the pre-learned expressions

- tell Ss there are 6 mistakes in the last exercise. - ask them to find the mistakes. - check the answers OC.

Stage 10 (Speaking) (6-9 minutes) • to make students practise on their speaking skills

- pair Ss. - ask them to practise the dialogue. - switch when complete.
