Main Aims

  • To give students exposure and practice of present continuous

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of reading for gist and specific information.
  • To introduce and practice lexical phrases with 'place'.

Procedure

Intro to the topic (2-4 minutes) • To start a conversation about CCTV

After introducing what CCTV is (write what it stands for on WB), let the students talk for a couple of minutes about CCTV. Ask where and why we use CCTV and what they think about being watched. Write the questions on WB.

Rading for gist (3-4 minutes) • To learn what kinds of texts they are

Give Ss copies of the text 'Readers' Response - CCTV is Watching You'. Let the Ss read the text, then ask their ideas about the letters. Ask such questions 'Are all writers happy about CCTV? Why not?' Then, let Ss do Ex1. Give the correct answer after hearing them.

Reading for specifics (3-4 minutes) • To find specific information from the text

Let the students read the text again individually and do Ex2 in pairs. Check the answers with Ss.

Focus on lexis (3-4 minutes) • To teach new phrases

Write 'place' on WB. Ask students to read the text again and underline the phrases with 'place'. Then, let them guess the meaning of the phrases they have found. Give Ss the matching exercise and let them check their answers with in pairs. At the end of the class if T has extra time, T can ask Ss to write their own sentences using phrases with place.

Grammar (5-7 minutes) • To teach present continuous and stative verbs

Write the title on WB and an example sentence from the text. Introduce present continuous tense. Ask students discovery questions about present continuous tense. Help them write the form of the tense using the example sentence ( S+ to be +v-ing+object). Give the students the grammar sheet and let them talk about present continuous tense and why we do not use some verbs with present continuous tense. Write more stative verbs on WB. Let the students do the exercises in pairs and check answers together.
