Tp1 Life Changes Gist Reading

Description

A reading about a woman who was made redundant and started a very different life. The theme of the lesson is CHANGE.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give the Ss practice in reading for gist and intensively through the context of life changes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Phrasal verbs with live, Vocabulary and Speaking.

Procedure

Warm up (1-3 minutes) • Eliciting the title of the lesson (Changing Life)

On the board write : IFEL SENGACH - - - - - - - - - - - Ss guess as many words as they can to get LIFE CHANGES, if not hint the first letter of each word.

Asking warm up questions (4-6 minutes) • To get students to talk abut the main theme of the lesson, and hopefully provide some link to the next task, vocaulary.

Ss ask each other the printed question and get iedeas.

Feedback (1-2 minutes) • Wrap up the task

Ask Ss individually to talk about their friend's biggest change. What changes has your friend hasd recently? Give accuracy-based feedback (pronunciation, grammar, vocab)

Phrasal Verbs (3-5 minutes) • Practice using phrasal verbs with live

Elicit if they know what phrasal verbs are and ask for examples. Instruct to do task 1 using the particles to fill in the blanks.

Phrasal verbs Extension (2-3 minutes) • Making sure they know the meaning of the new phrasals

As a feedback to the previous task ask Ss to match the phrasal verbs with their definition.

Activating Phrasals (4-6 minutes) • To activate the phrasal verb they just learnet

Pair up Ss to ask and answer the questions in exercise 2 on page 66.

Lead into reading (2-3 minutes) • Activate schemata for the upcoming reading

Elicit ideas by the background picture on page 66 and the photo on page 67 as well as the title of the reading.

Gist Reading (1-2 minutes) • Gist Reading

Ask Ss to quickly skim the text to get the general idea and ask to answer the 3 questions. ICQs: Can you read the text word by word? How much time do you have? Can you talk to your partner?

Extensive reading (4-6 minutes) • To read the text extensively

Tell Ss they have more time to read the text and match the sentences in exercise 2 with the blanks.

Pair Check (1-2 minutes) • To check the answers, Peer correction

Ss check their answers in pairs.

Activation (5-6 minutes) • To Activate the vocabulary of the text and close the task.

Pre teach: Regrets, lifestyle, radical change. Ss in pairs discuss the questions and provide reasons for their answers.
