Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

WELCOME CHECK SEATING & VISIBILITY using students' names WARM-UP / LEAD-IN: "There is / there are" table game - T stands at empty table and stocks it one by one with items from the classroom and home in singles and multiples, modeling the TL for each with a full sentence "There is a book on the table." T elicits Ss repetition with each item. T goes through items again quickly to check vocab as needed. T goes to back of room and gestures Ss stand and face her (away from the table), then asks "Without looking, tell us what is on the table. Raise your hand and use a full sentence." T models sentence: "There are five markers on the table." If a lull, T asks, "Is there a [naming something NOT on the table] on the table?" After each student has recalled two items or when a "winner" has become clear, T gestures that Ss can sit.

Exposure (10-11 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T checks vocab in reading w/c on WB. T chests HO of hotel brochure. - Instructions: Read this short paragraph about a hotel. In pairs, answer the questions on this handout (chests HO). I will help you if you have any questions." - T pairs Ss according to skill level, distributes two HOs and monitors. - Early finishers check answers with others. - All check answers on WB. - After completion, w/c FB.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T reveals information on WB, first eliciting "When are 'there is' and 'there are' used?": "We use these when we are talking about the existence of things." - Form: existence (n.) = the state of being real + pronunciation with drill: /ɪgˈzɪstəns/ - There is + a/an + singular noun + "there is" /ˈther ɪz/ with linking sound "There is a marker in my hand." Drilling - There are + plural noun + "there are" /ˈther a:r/ with linking sound "There are seven students here today." Drilling - T briefly elicits student sentences about their own homes, prompting with vocabulary such as "bedroom," "telephone," "radio," "television" as needed.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. chests underlining HO, then distributes after instructions. - Instructions: On your own, underline the correct word in each of these sentences. - Early finishers check their answers with others and then on WB. - W/c FB, including listening to recording to check answers. Drilling of all sentences.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T chests "There is / There are" HO. - Instructions: Fill in the rest of the sentences. - Early finishers check answers with others and then on WB. - W/c FB. NB: If time is running short, this stage will be skipped.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T. shows realia (a travel brochure), says "Now you will create a brochure of your perfect hotel or your favorite city or neighborhood in Istanbul." - Instructions: Work in two groups to write down what the place has, using "there is" and "there are." Then you can draw your brochure on paper. You can include drawings of places. When you have finished, you can draw the brochure on the whiteboard. ICQ: Are you going to work on your own? Ss are gestured into two groups. T monitors throughout, distributing colored paper and WB markers and assisting with TL and other language issues and general concepts.
