Description

In this lesson, students will learn the -ed and -ing adjectives and their uses through Guided discovery method

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of -ed and -ing adjectives in the context of describing person's feeling and the situation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of the present simple tense in the context of talking about facts about the relation between American families and the television.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask students questions to set the lesson context. For example, Do you like watching TV?.Teacher will give the students pieces of papers and Ask the to write their favorite TV program. Teacher will ask the students to mingle and find people who like the same program and ask them to write the names on the same piece of paper under the program name. Teacher will ask students to make sentences about their classmates' favorite program, e.g. Ozlem likes Opera.

Pre-Reading (5-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will use the PowerPoint to show the question that the students should discuss. students discuss the questions which are related to their lives . After students discuss the questions, they tell the class about any interesting thoughts.

While-Reading (8-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task

Teacher will give students " kill your TV" text. Students read the text for gist. Then teacher will ask them to discuss with their partner the question " Could they live without TV for a week? Why? Why not? " After that they give feedback to the teacher and the class about any interesting reasons.

Post-Reading (6-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher will use the PowerPoint to show questions to the students. Students discuss the questions about the relationship between Turkish people and TV. Students tell the teacher and the class about any interesting thoughts.

Language Focus (7-7 minutes) • Help students understand new vocabulary by deducing the meaning from the context.

Teacher will ask the students to underline -ed and -ing adjectives and deduce their uses from the text. Teacher will show picture with example by the PowerPoint to help students. Teacher may use concept questions to help the students to deduce the uses. Then the students tell the teacher about the uses of -ed and -ing adjectives. Teacher will show the rules by the PowerPoint and ask them to complete the rules. Students give some examples to show their understanding.

Restricted Activity 1 (6-6 minutes) • check the students understanding

Teacher will give the student a handout with an excersice for underlining the correct adjectives. Students work individually and underline the correct adjectives. Then check their answers in pairs. After that ask students to unfold the paper and check their answers.

Restricted Activity 2 (5-5 minutes) • For students to practice more the -ed and -ing adjectives.

teacher will give students a handout with pictures and sentences. Then ask them to complete the adjectives with -ed or -ing . Ask them to unfold the paper to check their answers with their partner.
