Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a brief biography of Lionel Messi in the context of personalities who have risen from poverty

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the vocabulary of talent and the rise from poverty in the context of sport

Procedure

Stage 1 Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students if they watched the world cup. Had they expected Argentina or Germany to win. Get a student to remove paper covering board that says 'Biography' Define. CCQ on meaning Timeline to show meaning Drill pronunciation Remove paper covering his last name. Drill Remove paper covering his first name. Drill

Stage 2 -Reading#1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show reading, tell sts we're going to read Messi's biography. Note this was written in 2010. A bit old, but still true. Sts read q. first, then read article quickly. CCQ- how many minutes are you going to read it for? (2) - Why are you reading it (to answer these two questions) Sts. read for gist. Peer check - Write blocking or potentially blocking words on board while students work. Mark syllabic stress and intonation arrows. - Group feedback

Stage 3 Reading #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Work together on meaning of identified words. Use CCQs. Hand out questions for this round, hand out text. Sts Re-read to answer comprehension questions. Move students into different pairs for checking. Feeback

Stage 4- Post-Reading Vocabulary exercise (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Pick 5 difficult words to do CCQs for. If this goes well, drill pronunciation of each word or phrase, Ask them what words they don't know the meaning of. Have the class read all the words so we can pronounce them, model pronunciation on any that don't sound right, eg. extraordinary, mistake, coached, smashing are likely to cause pronunciation difficulties. turning projector on once we get to a hard one, so sts can see it. I can model it, and once have Sts tell me if they don't know the word in which case pre-prepared CCQs will be used. Elicit definition of a synonym. Hand out synonym exercise (Vocabularly exercise) Check on wall

Stage 5- Post Reading task (8-10 minutes) • to give students writing and reading practice, and to utilize all available lesson time

Write a letter to someone you would like to know more information about. This does not have to be a famous person. Ask them some questions about their life, or how they started out in their job, neighborhood, llfestyle etc. (5 mins) Read your letter to your partner.

Stage 6- Additional Speaking task, time permitting (3-4 minutes) • to provide students with continued speaking practice while utilizing the last few minutes of available time

Willing students share a summary of their letter with the class
