Description

In this lesson, students practice reading skills through text about men in 21st century. The lesson starts with a discussion on the typical jobs/duties men and women have. This is followed by a quick reading to find out an appropriate title for the article, and detailed reading to answer the questions. Finally students will do a freer speaking activity for fluency in speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice reading for gist and detail in the context of changing roles of men and women in society.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will put students in groups of 3 or 4 for this activity. I will hand out cut-out words of male/female jobs. I will make two columns on the board (Male / Female) I will have them stick the jobs under the appropriate column they think. Afterwards, I will have a quick discussion. "Why is soldier a male job?" I hope to spark some opinions about the roles of men and women. I will try to establish that men and women should be free to do same things.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will tell the class we are going to read an article in a little bit, but before that, I will show students the picture of man feeding his baby. I will ask them what might be the upcoming article about. I will get predictions from the class, and write some of their ideas in short phrases on the board. I will ask them to come up with some titles for this article. I will write those on the board, as well.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will show students the article. I will give them 5 minutes to skim the article to see if their predictions are correct or how close they were. After reading I will have them discuss with their partner what's the main idea of the article. After feedback, I will focus on some of the phrases in the article, such as domestic labour, feminine side, breadwinners, my blood boils. I will elicit meanings using the context and give examples, especially for "my blood boils" as Turkish has the same expression with different meaning.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will have students read the article again in more detail, and answer the questions in Ex.3b and c. Students do the exercise on their own, then compare answers in pairs. I will check answers with the class.

Post-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will ask them a discussion question: In what ways do you think the role of men has changed in your country in the last forty years? I will pair them up to discuss amongst each other, so that everyone would have an opportunity to speak. I will try to monitor somewhat close to hear what they think - and allow them to ask questions if they wish. I will have WC FB if there is time.
