Magical Places

Description

In this lesson the students will focus on a reading text based in the concept of Magical places. The students will practice their reading skills and answering topic related questions. The students will also practice their speaking skills, discussing their own opinions of magical places they would like to visit.

Materials

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Magic and mystery in the context of travel

  • To provide fluency in the context of magical places to visit

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To make the students familiar with the topic, The students are divided into small groups. They are given the pictures. They look at the pictures and brainstorm whether they know where and what these pictures are about. the teacher elicits some ideas from the class and puts them on the board.

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text, make it accessible. To raise awareness of the language.

The teacher puts the students in to 3 groups. The teacher gives each group one piece of the text. They read the title, match it to one of the pictures and compare with their predictions.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

The students work in their same groups, they read the text and answer the questions below the text. The teacher monitors the groups. The groups remember what they have read and tell other groups about the places providing the information required to answer the questions.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

The students are divided into pairs. They are given the true/false statements. The students look at the statements and then find the required information and fill in the gaps with T or F. The teacher monitors. The students compare answers. The teacher gives students a hand out with definitions written on it. the students work in pairs and match the word for the definitions on the paper. The teacher gets whole class feedback.

Post-Reading- Speaking task (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students are put into small groups. They are asked to think of the places they have read and heard about. The teacher can provide extra copies of the readings to help the students who have forgotten about the places. They individually decide which place they would like to visit and why. the students discuss in groups giving their reasons. The teacher joins into groups and listens to their ideas and gives own opinion if possible. If time, the students switch groups and exchange ideas. Whole class feedback and share interesting ideas.
