Description

The aim of this lesson is to enable Ss to boost their reading skills, for gist and specific purposes through sample texts from blogs about celebration events- based on Staraightforward Elem- SsBk, U 6A, pg:62.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Reading for gist and detailed purposes in the context of celebration through passages from blogs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • New lexis and speaking abilities in the context of celebration.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will stick some photos about celebration on WB and Ss will tell relevant words they know about what they see in the photos. They will be familiar with the word 'celebration'. Are we happy in a celebration? Yes. Do we have a party? Yes, generally.

Pre-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I write the vocabulary of ex-1 in speaking part. I pre-teach the possibly unknown, for example: retirement and wedding. Some concept questions: Are you old now? probably yes. Do you go to work everyday? no. Are you a single person after the wedding? no. I will model the pronunciation, drill and show stress. Ss do the exercise and tell the answers in open class. Ss work in pairs and answers to the following questions: Do you celebrate these events? What do you do? I monitor them and help when necessary.

While-Reading#1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task.

I pre-teach the words 'blog' 'congratulate' trying to create contexts and ask CCQs: Do I write on the internet? Yes. Do other peole write on it? No, they read. Is it good news for her? Yes. Am I happy for her/him? I set the task before they read. Ss read the texts for themselves in 2 minutes and match them with the pictures in ex-1. Pairs check and one of them writes the answer one by one on WB. Others tell If they agree.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Pairs do the ex-2 in reading together in 2 minutes again. I project the texts on WB, Ss tell their answers and why they tell this. The others state if they agree.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss do the True/False ex in reading part on their own in 2 or 3 minutes. They need to tell the correct answer if a statement is false. Pairs check their answers and they write them on WB and state their reasons. I correct if necessary.
