Description

In this lesson students will work on their reading for gist and reading for detail skills in the context of horoscopes.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about horoscopes in the context of job selection

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of horosocopes
  • To provide clarification for words representing star signs and also for new vocabulary in the reading text.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Bring a newspaper to the class and go through the pages asking for the names of the different sections such as economy, sports, politics, local events etc. - Show Ss the horoscopes and elicit the words "horoscopes" and "astrology". - Give SS handouts with the star signs and their names. - Ss match the pictures and the words. - Ss check answers in pairs.

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Give Ss these questions: How often do you read your horoscope? Do you belive in horoscopes or astrology? - Ss discuss in pairs. - Get WCFB.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with reading for gist task

- Give Ss the reading text and ask if they can see any problems with it. - Elicit that some words at the beginning of some of the lines are not easy to read. - Tell Ss not to worry about this yet. - Give Ss these titles: 1. Horoscopes are a waste of time. 2. Why you should read your horoscope 3. Astrology and the secret police - Ss read the titles and guess in pairs which one will be the summary of the article. - Ss read the text and choose the best title. - Ss compare their answers in pairs. - Get WCFB

While-Reading #2 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with reading for detail practice

- Ss work in pairs and agree on what the first word is in each line of paragraphs 2 and 3. - Ss compare their answers in groups of four. - Provide full text on the board for Ss to check their answers.

While-Reading #3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with reading for specific information practice

- Give Ss the gap fill activity. - Ss read the text again to complete the sentences with words from the text. - Ss compare their answers in pairs. - Get WCFB and check understanding of the words to be sure Ss are clear on the words. (see Language Analysis Page for CCQs)

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Put Ss in pairs and give Student A and Student B question handouts. - Ss ask and answer questions in pairs. - Get some WCFB and if necessary do error correction. - If there is exra time Ss will write a weekly prediction for three star signs in piars.
