Description

In this lesson the Ss will be developing their writing skills by writing a letter to a friend.

Materials

Abc Letter for reading
Abc w/b
Abc Useful language
Abc Cut outs of topics from the text
Abc Cut outs of sections
Abc Paper for letter writing

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with the lexis and structure to write informal letters to friends using the TL and an example.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about informal letters

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write title ' A letter to keep in touch' on w/b Reading ex1: Ask Ss if they receive a letter from friend that they haven't seen in a while what 3 things do they expect to read in this letter. Group work. FB- get students to write their answers on the w/b.

Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to practice reading for general understanding

Ss given H/O for reading task and read individually for general understanding. Ss check their ideas in pairs.

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to read for detail and understand the meaning of the text

Ex 3 Ask Ss to write down on the w/s of the text the title 'Topics'. Show on w/b and ask ICQ's if necessary. Ss to match cut outs of topics of the text to the letter. Ss work in pairs FB - Ss check with other pairs (Optional) Ss to work in groups and write a summary of the letter in one sentence. Take FB.

Writing skills - controlled task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to understand different sections of text and what connective words to use for each section.

Ex 5 Ask Ss to match cut outs of types of sections of text to words. Take FB and ask Ss to come and write on the board the words. Discuss with Ss what all the words have in common - Connective words that join sentences together to form a sequence and meaning. Ask Ss to spend a few mins discussing in groups other words for each section. Elicit from students more words and write on the board.

Preparation for writing a letter (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with opportunity to plan what information to include in letter

Tell Ss that they will prepare a letter to a friend like the letter they read. Ask them to spend a few mins taking notes of ideas they would like to write about. Things they have done and things they will be doing. Ss compare ideas in groups and discuss which ideas to include. Give Ss a H/O of useful language Ask them CCQs. Drill them.

Writing a letter - freer practice (15-17 minutes) • To allow students to practice writing letters using the TL

Explain to Ss that they will now write their letters using the ideas they've made notes on and the TL they've learnt in the lesson. Making sure to include changes in their lives. Give Ss paper to write on. Monitor and assist if necessary. (Optional) - Ss swap letters with partners who should then give FB on errors. Otherwise Ss put letters on board and Ss decide who's life has changed the most.
