Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice to beginner students in the context of Using Social Media

Subsidiary Aims

  • To clarify elements of the lexical set related to having an electronic or social media profile and to provide the opportunity to practice pronunciation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Powerpoint slide- Show a picture of Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, Whats Ap founders Jan Koum and Brian Action, and Twitter Founders Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evert Williams. Elicit responses as to the questions 'Who are they" and 'What are their jobs?" - Sts will likely only know Mark Zuckerberg if any of the people, and will be asked to ' think about who they are and what their jobs are'- Are they taxi drivers? Managers? Waiters? and to discuss in pairs - Logos will be revealed, and people should be able to connect. Elicit Responses. - Ask students to predict what we're going to talk about today.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Clarify meaning of language which will be used on the recording : Use Powerpoint slides to show pictures and elicit meaning with minimal talking on my part uploaded tagged updates email ID Profile Awesome I'm good

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Listen to text Students fill out initial q: a) Jenny and Sam are new friends or b) Jenny and Sam are husband and wife Peercheck to correct Group feedback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Long questions on handout. Second listening - Peer check - Group feedback. Video is on youtube. Ss can watch it as a class after doing their questions. Drill the terms in the listening, 1st with tape, then drill terms not on tape

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Clarify meaning of words Ss might struggle with Ask Ss about their answers. Do they have a lot of info on their profiles? Ask them if that's good or bad? Drill words that appeared in the questions and get students to ask each other the questions If time remains, listen to a cued up youtube video fon twitter. Unlikelty to get through that clip. Can also spend a few seconds on the cons of social media. and discuss in graded manner. Video will provide opportunity for discussion .
