Description

In this lesson Ss will be looking at future tenses (perfect and continuous) in the context of a text about diseases. The lesson will follow on from reading task in the previous lesson and will look into the MFPA of future tenses. The Ss will be focusing on grammar and use the knowledge learnt in this context to conduct speaking activities using the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of diseases using future present and continuous
  • To provide clarification of future perfect and future continuous in the context of worldly diseases.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussing in the context of future goals

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Bring Ss focus to the ' Winning the battle against disease' text from the previous lesson. Ask them to think about - what the WHO hopes for 2020, and how health workers plan for the prevention and cure of Polio. Take FB.

Language Focus (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to understand the meaning of the TL

Write on w/b 2 statements from text that will be our TL: Hopes are high that the diseases will have disappeared by 2020 at the latest. From now on health workers will be targeting the four remaining countries... Ss do Grammar ex1 and peer check. Check Ss understand the meaning of the 2 phrases.Use CCQs. Take FB. Give Ss personalised examples. - According to the timetable, I will have finished this lesson by [insert time]. - This Saturday I will be celebrating my 25th Birthday in Istanbul. Check understanding by CCQs and Ss to elicit the tense of the examples.

Grammar focus (10-12 minutes) • To allow students to understand the form of the tenses

Ss fill in gap-fill of tense forms on w/s. Ss work in pairs. Monitor. Take FB, Ss write their answer on w/b. Look at the form of the sentences on the board.Elicit from students the parts of the sentences that are future tenses. Ask Ss to find 2 examples of future present and continuous in the text and underline. Ss work alone, peer check. Monitor and take FB. (Optional) If time Ss work in pairs and give examples of sentences using FP and FC.

Controlled practise with gap-fill (10-12 minutes) • To provide Ss an opportunity to practise target skills and language.

Ss asked to think about whether they think AIDS is curable/ preventable? Ss read p135 ex 7 and check without writing. Take FB. Ss complete ex 7 in small groups with tenses FC or FP. Monitor. Ss check answers with answer key. Take FB.

Semi - Controlled practise-verb forms (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to practise the verb forms.

Bring Ss attention to time phrases in ex 7. 'By the year ...' and 'over the next 20 years..' Elicit from students whether each statement is FP or FC. Draw a timeline if necessary. Grammar ex 3: Ss to look at the Vision 2020 text and students should complete ex3 using the given phrases. First elicit one on the w/b. Ss work in pairs. Monitor and take FB.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for speaking using the TL

Ask Ss what their goals are for the future, thinking about health/family/ jobs etc. Give examples. Ss use prompts in Speaking ex 2 to write their own goals. Monitor and check form and accuracy. Ask for few examples from Ss. Drill students chorally and individually on my examples. I'll've ... Use w/b Ss compare goals with each other.
