Description

In this lesson, Ss learn certain lexis and phrases to be able to describe hotel facilities (or facilities of a place). They practice the phrases and lexis through reading and speaking exercises.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss fluency with speaking practice in a debate in the context of hotel facilities
  • To provide Ss with being able to work on gist, detailed and deduction reading practice using a text about hotel facilities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice of pronunciation and speaking with the target lexis.
  • To provide practices of describing places in the context of hotel facilities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T projects some pictures on the board, which are related to the lesson topic/ context. -S/he writes one or two related lexis on the board. -Ss brainstorm about the topic/pictures in groups. -T asks Ss to come to the w/b and add more lexis about what they have brainstormed about the pictures. -T adds a couple more words if necessary to make an introduction to the context. - T shows a website to clarify 'facilities' -T makes them repeat the words to get them familar with the reading and speaking sections in advance.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Ss look at Speaking Exercise 1 read it silently. -S/he models the phrases by eliciting the answers from the Ss. -Ss fill in the blanks first individually, then work in pairs to tell each other their answers.( Speaking Exercise 2) -T monitors them and give them feedback where necessary. -S/he writes their common mistakes on the board.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-T gives each S a reading, giving information about a hotel and its facilities. -T tells them to underline important points and facilities they see individually. -Ss read it for 2 minutes. -T tells the Ss to work in pairs to tell each other key words about the hotel facilities. -Finally, T shows the hotels' pictures on the board in its colorful version and asks Ss which one they would like to stay and why they would like to stay there. -Ss work in pairs again to answer. -T elicits answers from the Ss.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-Ss do exercise 2 individually to search for a detailed information. -They check their answers in groups. -T elicits answers from the Ss. S/he asks Ss to come to the board and underline the related section in the reading part. -Ss find out the word asked in exercise 3 individually. -T changes groups and Ss check their answers in groups. -T nominates Ss to elicit answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (7-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T puts the pictures of the book on the class walls. -T models the speaking exercise. " The Sheakspeare Guest House is non smoking,but -The Standford Central Hotel has smoking and non-smoking rooms." -Ss stand up as groups and talk about the hotels and their facilities. -T monitors them. -They all sit down and T elicits answers from the Ss.
