Description

In this lesson students practice reading skills through a text about marriage. The lesson starts with a discussion about marriage. This is followed by a quick reading to find out what the writer thinks about marriage and matching paragraphs with sentences. Finally there is some freer practice activity for fluency in speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice reading for gist and detail in the context of changing attitudes towards marriage.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To generate interest in the topic, I will write 'Marriage is a thing of the past' on the WB. I will underline 'a thing of the past' and ask the class to give some examples of things that are of the past to make sure they understand what it means. e.g. Walkman. Then I will elicit some views from the class about 'Marriage is a thing of the past.' 'Do you agree or disagree?' (Ex. 1)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will link the lead-in to the article. "You will read an article about marriage." I will briefly explain what the article is about. "The writer talks about if marriage is a thing of the past." I will give them clear instructions "Just look through the article and discover if the writer agrees or disagrees. Work with your partner. You have 3 minutes." Then I will hand out the article. (Ex. 2) I will get WC FB once they are finished.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To provide controlled oral practice of the new vocabulary and check meaning.

Before doing the next reading activity, I will go over some vocabulary from the text. I will elicit the meaning by giving example sentences. I will write the words on WB and drill chorally. dead/alive "Is marriage dead?" increase/decrease "The number of divorces increase..." agree/disagree "The writer agrees/disagrees.." divorce "Someone is getting divorced..." belong "The prison of marriage belongs..."

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will tell students to read the article in detail and put the sentences in gaps. I will get them in groups first, then hand out the sentences. I will do the first one as an example with the WC so they are clear. Once the time is up, we will do whole class checking. (Ex. 3)

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will have students discuss questions in Ex. 4 and couple other similar questions. I will hand out the questions and have them discuss in pairs. I will extend this into a class discussion and get some WC FB to get some students tell the class what they think.
