Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about inviting someone out and making suggestions in the context of going out

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of going out

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context of going out and engage students in the topic

Arrange the seatings into groups of 4. Ask student to turn around. Ask them to try not to use Turkish because it will be better for them to try to use English. Put up pictures of famous people I would like to meet, George Clooney, Madonna, and Elmo. Elicit from sts who they are and what they know about them. Explain that they are famous people I would like to meet. Ask student the guess which one I would like to go out with. Explain if I met them what I would do with them (e.g., go on a date). Get sts to write the names of 3 people they would like to meet and why. Sts share their opinions in pairs. Get some WC FB.

Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist listening task

Prepare sts for the listening. Establish the characters, Ruby Tuesday, Davina Sayers, Patrick Trotter and Stuart Simeon. Write down on the board 1. Who? 2. What? Ask sts to listen to 2 conversations and answer (1) who is talking to who (i.e. speaker's names; what is the relationship between them?) and (2) What are they discussing? (i.e. general topic and main points). Play recording 1.40-1.41. Sts do ex 1. Pause after the first recording, sts check with peers. Replay 1st recording if useful. Play 2nd recording. Sts check with peers. Get WC FB

Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging listening for specific information task

Prepare sts for the 2nd listening. Let them read ex. 2. Elicit meanings of words that sts may not know: pub, meal. Remind the sts who the people are. Write the names on WB with the first letters underlined. Play the recording again and ask students to write the letters indicate the people each sentence is about. Check in pairs. (Use hand gesture, 2 ) then get WC FB.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Use the discussion questions in TB pg. 52 Discussion Starters: Asking someone out. First ask 1-2 strong students to suggest a famous person (movie stars, singer, sportsperson, etc.) that would be good to go on a date with. Ask why they chose the person, where would they go together and what would they do. Give sts the questions. Let them discuss in pairs. Get some WC FB
