Elementary level

Description

In this lesson Ss will learn how to ask questions in past simple tense through guided activities and they also do speaking activities through controlled and freer practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Past Simple Question Forms in the context of Travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking Ability

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

On the handouts Ss do the ex-4 on page 26 in Straightforward Elem. WkBk. And pairs check together then the groups tell their answers in open class. I correct where necessary. I will project the answer key on the board. They can check once more.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To provide the form of the past simple questions.

Elicit - Did you visit lots of popular places? Did+Subject+Verb1+Object? Yes,+S+did. No,S+didn't Drill for correct pronunciation chorally and individually.

Controlled Oral Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and provide them with confidence for further practice

A S asks two of the questions in ex-4 and the other S answers, in pairs, then pairs swap roles. I monitor them.

Semi-controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss do the ex-1 in Speaking part on pg: 57 in SsBk individually within 2 minutes. Pairs check their answers. I elicit a mini dialogue with a student, S: Last year did you travel by plane? T: Yes I did S: Where? T: To Ankara I lie about one thing, s/he tries to guess it. Then make them think about last year and in pairs they ask each other and lie and the other tries to find it. They switch the roles. I monitor and take FB after they finish.

Freer Practice (8-12 minutes) • To provide a freer practice of the target language

Ss will do the ex on pg:211 in TsBk. They will have 2 minutes to make questions individually. Before that, I will show pictures of some possibly unknown volabulary in the sentences by projecting them on the WB. Then in pairs they ask questions to each other and answer. They will add up their partners scores and tell them in open class- write them on WB one by one if time allows. In groups of four they tell each other about their partner: "Canan's ideal holiday is at the beach." Partners say if they agree.

Feedback and Delayed Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

While they are doing the last activity in groups of four I monitor them and write some errors on the WB. After they finish the discussion, I will let them correct the errors for themselves nominating some of them. I give FB.
