Materials

Abc Student's Book
Abc Teacher's Book
Abc Workbook

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Holiday travel words in the context of preparing a suitcase and checking in at the airport

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of holiday travel vocabulary as well as listening (reading) skills.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a large suitcase on the WB and elicit from students items that you would need when going on holiday (draw them on the board). Have students draw their own suitcase and share it with a partner

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will look at the projected picture of a suitcase full of items. Teacher will elicit from students one or two things they see in the suitcase. Students will work in pairs to figure out what all the items are in the suitcase. Teacher elicites students to come and write on the board the answers to the key. Teacher also begins a vocabulary list on the side of the board.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be focused on a second picture. Teacher will elicit ideas from the students as to what is going on in the picture. Teacher will ask the students, 'What do you do before you go on holiday?' Students will work in pairs and discuss what they do before they go on holiday. Teacher will take some general feedback. Teacher then explains we will listen to Walter and Thelma. Afterwards, tell me, Who packed the bags, Walter or Thelma? Students listen to dialogue and check with another student the answer.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Teacher has students look at some things written on the board (or projected). Students work in pairs trying to remember if yes or no the items were in the car in the dialogue. Again, the students listen to the dialogue. The students are given the dialogue (text) and check their answers in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs, the students will practice the dialogue. Teacher monitors and helps with pronunciation.

Listening activity 2 (5-6 minutes) • Students will practice their listening skills

Teacher tells the students that Walter and Thelma have a problem at the airport. Teacher elicites ideas from students and writes them on the board. Teacher plays the dialogue and as a class they decide which one was correct. Prize?

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • Students will practice the vocabulary they learned

Teacher tells students to think about going on a holiday and what they might pack in their bags. In pairs, students will tell the other student what they will have in their bag.

Homework/If time allows (5-5 minutes) • Extra practice (fun)

Allow the students to do the crossword puzzle in pairs.
