Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a speech in the context of elections

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a speech in the context of elections

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage students

Show some visuals on Powerpoint and have Ss elicit the words related to the pictures (politicians, elections, election campaigns etc.)

Preparation Stage 1 (3-5 minutes) • To predict the topic and generate interest towards the topic

Write the categories on the board (crime, health care, childcare, leisure, the environment, transport, the economy, education). Write a sentence that is related to one of those categories and ask Ss to match the sentence to one of those categories. Ss discuss their answers in pairs. T elicits the answer.

Preparation Stage 2 (5-7 minutes) • To get Ss familiar with the context

Ss choose two of the categories and write two optimistic statements about them in pairs. One S from each pair writes the sentences on the board. Ss read their friends' sentences and match them to the category they belong to in pairs. T elicits the answer in whole class discussion.

Language Focus (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T writes some future sentences that a politician uses before the elections on the board. T checks the meaning with some concept check questions and highlights the form before Ss write their own sentences.

Semi-controlled Practice/Production (5-7 minutes) • To give semi-controlled practice of the TL

Ss choose some of the categories in pairs. Ss share the categories they've chosen with their partner to write an optimistic speech for the elections of their country. After sharing the categories, Ss write their statements individually.

Semi-controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To allow Ss to share their ideas

Ss read what their partners have written and discuss if they agree or disagree with the statements. Ss finalize their sentences for the speech they're going to give.

Speaking Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide free speaking practice

Ss present their speech to the class for the elections. While listening to the presenters, the rest of the class takes notes about the speeches.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To establish answers as a whole class

Get feedback from the class about the speeches they've heard. Ss vote for the most optimistic one and give reasons for their choices in whole class discussion.

Delayed Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with feedback on errors made in the freer speaking activity

Give Ss some positive feedback on their speeches and correct any errors.
