Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn relevant vocabulary about weather and holiday activities. They will listen to a record about a holiday in Canada and do the relevant exercises in pairs or individually - based on Straightforward Elem, Ss Book. Unit:5B, pg:54-55. Listening ex 1-4.

Materials

Abc A record in listening part on pg 54, pictures about weather, a handout with questions on it. .

Main Aims

  • : To give studentss practice in listening for gist and specific information in the context of a Cross Canada Trip.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review basic weather vocabulary and vocabulary to talk about holiday activities/facilities. To give practice in freer speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Some true false questions will be asked. Is Canada a big country? Yes. Is it in Europe? No, in America. Do Canadians speak English? Yes. Is it a cold country? Yes. Is it usually sunny? No.

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make relevant lexis accessible

Stick photos on the WB and study them with Ss. Sunny, cold, snowy, windy etc. Write the vocab under photos. Check pronunciation chorally and individually. Pairs ask and repeat in each other. Show visuals of holiday pic.s on pg. 54. Divide Ss into new groups and pairs describe the photos to one another. I will monitor. Set the task about listening, they will put the the pic.s. in the correct order.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks.

They listen to the record and do the ex-1 in Listening part. Pairs check their answers. Play the record again if necessary. Ss state their answers to the whole class and I will write on WB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with relevant lexis concerning holiday activities and study MFPA of the target lang.

Deliver handouts on which lexis about holidays are written. Study them first with the Ss writing on WB. Check and correct pronunciation. Set their task: listen to the text again and find which of these lexis are mentioned in the record. They put a tick near the word or sentence If they hear them.

Listening 2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks.

Ss listen again and while listening they do the ex-2 on page 55. Listen again if necessary . Pairs check the answers. Ss tell their answers and while they are telling, I will clarify the answers on WB at the same time.

Post-Listening / Free Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Stick the Canada map on the course book on WB. Ss work in pairs and discuss: imagine this is Cross Canada Trip, would you like to visit these places? Why, why not? I monitor them. After they discuss, pairs will come to the WB and write what they think trying to use what they have learned. I praise them for the coorparation.
