Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for giving and following simple directions in the context of places in a town.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of places in a town in the context of giving and following directions.

Procedure

Warmer (5-7 minutes) • To review the present perfect and engage the Ss

Take role, ask Ss for the date, and the weather. Arrange Ss into a group and provide the cards in one pile in the center. Demonstrate the activity. Each turn, a Ss picks up a card and tells the rest of the group she/he has done this activity, regardless of whether they actually have or not. The other Ss then ask her/him questions in the past simple to find out the details. Write up some question words on the board (e.g. When...? Why...? Who .....with? etc) for Ss to refer to while they do this. Ss then decide if the one with the car dis lying or telling the truth. Monitor carefully. Take notes. In feedback ask Ss to tell about the other group member's experiences, using the 3rd person correctly.

Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To elicit/teach places in a town

Elicit teach places in a town lexis using a slideshow presentation. After the Ss have seen and said each lexical item, turn of the projector and play the back to the board game. After Ss are comfortable with the items they can complete exercises 1 and 2a+b in TEp.106.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Ss listen to a person asking for directions. After Ss answer some general questions, they will listen again and follow the directions on a map.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss will complete the 'How to .... ask for and give directions' box. Drill Ss with the items so they feel comfortable with them. Ss will then perform mini role-plays, where they rehearse getting the attention of a police officer by saying excuse me, and then asking for directions. Use police hat realia here to enhance activity.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Provide Ss with map of town handout A and B. Tell Ss that the shaded places are on both maps, so they may refer to them when giving directions. Ensure Ss know they are not to look at each other's maps!

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Write common errors on WB and drill Ss to use language correctly.
