Description

In this lesson students read a text about different modes of transportation and find out about the popularity of each type. The text also introduces the comparative and superlative forms. They also learn common words and phrases connected to travel.

Procedure

Warmer (5-7 minutes) • Introducing the topic

A class survey: On the board By car, By train / subway, On foot / walk, by bus 1. How do you get to class? 2. How long does it take you? 3. Do you normally have a good or bad trip? Students discuss with those sitting nearest them. Class: A show of hands: Which is the most popular? Establish the following: Who has the longest and shortest trip? Who has the best / easiest trip? Who has the worst? Why?

Intro (4-6 minutes) • Speaking

Get ST discuss the questions in pairs on page 28 ex. a Feedback: Try to establish which is the most popular kind.

Students read a text and answer these question: Why do you think the text is called Race to the Sun? What are the popular ways of getting to Avignon? (elicit the meaning of discount airline) What do the journalist do? What do you think set off mean? Put the pictures on the board

Put ss in groups of three and four and ask them to pick a name for their team and write their names on the board. c. put these on the board: Which do you think was...? the quickest the cheapest the most comfortable the most convenient Establish the difference between comfortable and convenient Which one causes less difficulty? (convenient) Which one has good chair? (comfortable) Which one suggests the journey starts and ends on schedule? (convenient) which one you can spread your arms and legs? (comfortable) Get them agree on the answers.

a. Ask ss to read the scrambled paragraphs and decide if the paragraphs are about the train or plane. And compare with their teammates. b. Feedback: What words helped them decide on the answers?
