By the end of the lesson Ss will learn be able to talk about personal preferences in the context of popular culture. They will express themselves by using like, love, hate, and prefer. They will also be able to make and respond to suggestions in the context of weekend activities.

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about deciding whether something is art or vandalism in the context of popular culture

Procedure

Warmer (5-10 minutes) • To review last lesson's grammar (comparatives)

Game: My Car's Better! Ask Ss about common forms of transport in their country, and about any unusual forms of transport you've used in the pastç Arrange Ss into pairs. Provide 1 set per pair (you might have to play as well). They shuffle and divide up the cards between them. The Ss must use comparative sentences correctly to win a pair of cards. The winner is whoever gets all of the cards.

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss look at the photos and describe what they can see. Elicit / teach 'art' and 'vandalism'.

While-Reading 1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss read the article quicky and match it with one of the photos

While-Reading 2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text again and decide if 5 statements are true (T) or false (F)

Scan-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to scan read for specific information

Ss find words in the text and match them with their meanings.

Post-reading task (5-8 minutes) • For Ss to be able to expand on what they've just read

Ss look at the photos and discuss the questions
