Description

In this lesson, students review and learn some expressions for talking about understanding and asking for clarification or clarifying. The lesson starts with a discussion of some kinds of games people play and is followed by a conversation about a Chinese game. Finally there is a free practice for students to talk and explain the games they know through a group discussion speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of different kinds of games

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of some expressions used for talking about understaning and asking for clarification or clarifying in the context of different kinds of games.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context of different kinds of games and engage students

Write some words about different kinds of games on the w/b. Group Ss into pairs and ask them to talk about the games briefly. Elicit the topic from Ss. Monitor aside. FB - W/C find out what games are common in thier country (e.g. Turkey).

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Show Ss a picture of people playing a Chinese game - Mahjong - and find out if any Ss know it. If anyone knows, make use of him/her during the lesson. Ss do picture matching with the rules in ex 2 alone first. Peer check and then FB - W/C. Ss read the questions in ex 3a. and listen to the recording for listening for gist. Peer check for the answers. FB - W/C - Ss read the conversation 3b. to check answers.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss look at the highlighted expressions in the script individually in 2 minutes and match the explanations in ex4. Peer checking. FB - W/C check the answers.

Productive Task - Speaking (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skill through discussion about different kinds of games

Group them in different pairs and choose a game which their partner doesn't know about. Give Ss 3 minutes to think of the game they choose (individually) and plan how to introduce it with the target language in 3 minutes. Monitor and help if necessary. Ask them to join other pairs as groups of four and talk about their games again. Ss talk about the games in 5 minutes and choose one game that they like the most in their groups. Monitor and help if necessary. Take notes of some common errors.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

FB - praise Ss good use of language that they used in group discussion. Show some common errors on the w/b and encourage Ss to correct these mistakes by themselves first. Show the answers. Encourage them to try the new games they've learnt today in life.
