What Happened ?
To provide clarification and practice of accident prone vocabulary in the context of What happened .
To provide specific information listening practice using a recording and to practice fluency and accuracy speaking about accident prone in the context of what happened .
Procedure (34-45 minutes)
Introduce some pictures . Ask them what happened ? put them in pairs Elicit answers and put them on the whiteboard FB
Ss look at the pictures and say what they think has happened in each one . play the recording . Learners match each conversation to one of the pictures . Ss compare in pairs before checking as a class . FB
Ss try to complete the sentences from the conversations using the verbs Point out that they need to use the correct form of the verbs . Play the recording , stopping after each conversation to check the meaning and the pronunciation . FB
Put Ss in pair . Ss use the new language to talk about accidents and injuries and what often causes them . Feedback
Ss will practice saying how something happened . point out the three stems which can be used to explain a problem or accident : I WAS ON THE WAY TO... , I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF ... I WAS TRYING TO .... Ss complete the stems individually before comparing with a partner FB Ss complete the stems with a range of endings . Peer check clarify the patterns that follow each expression On the way to + NOUN Of + ing Was trying to +infinitive FB
Post flash cards on the W/B preparation :Tell Ss to think about their own experience of minor accidents and about how to express their ideas . Walk round and help with ideas and vocabulary as necessary Ss tell each other about their experiences Monitor while they are talking and take notes of language use Ask any student to tell the best story .
