Description

In this lesson Ss will learn lexis relating to the weather and will then produce the lexis taught in a freer speaking activity. Finally they will write a weather report and present this back to the class.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of weather lexis in the context of weather reports.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a report in the context of weather reports.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put pic of Canada on the board. What country is this? What is the weather like? Go through the symbols on the board: Cloudy sunny windy rainy icey. Get Ss to then model and drill your questions. Write the q's on the board: What's the weather like in Toronto? It's sunny etc In pairs discuss Canada's weather.

Useful Language (12-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Give HO 1. Ss complete complete the sentences with the names of the cities in Canada, then weather conditions and then match the temperature adjectives with the thermometer. Listen to track 1.76 to correct answers. Check meaning of umbrella. Model and drill sentences 1-4 as a class. Write on the board: Australia Great Britain South America Central America Spain. Model and drill

Freer speaking activity (8-10 minutes) • To produce the language taught in a freer speaking activity.

Get Ss to stand up. Ss go round the class and look at the weather maps on the wall and tell each other about the weather. In feedback. Listen to any good/bad language and put it on the board. Model and drill. (ensure pronoun 'it's' being used) (ensure what's not what)

Productive writing task (12-15 minutes) • Writing exercise describing a weather map.

Put Ss into 2/3s and assign them a weather map. Give HO of weather map to each Ss. Tell Ss to write 5-6 sentences. CCQ this question. Ss write a weather report about their country. Monitor and give help where required. Ss come up to the front of the class and give a weather report.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Write some errors up on the board you heard. Correct as a class.

Optional extra • Teach further lexis

Teach north/east/south/west on a compass on the board if there is time left in the lesson. Model and drill.
