Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of functional vocabulary in the context of new year traditions and resolutions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce the topic : "New Year traditions and resolutions". Hand out Ss a true/false activity about the video they will watch. Make it clear for what reason they will watch it. Ss watch a video about New Year traditions in the USA. Ss do the (true/false) activity. Give the answer key as a feedback.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

Hand out discussion questions about the similarities and differences between their culture and American culture in terms of New Year celebrations. Ss discuss the questions in groups. Take some general feedback. Ask two questions about the paragraph to clarify the aim of the reading "What kind of resolutions does the writer have? How is she/he going to celebrate the New Year? " Hand out the paragraph about the New Year resolutions. Ss read the paragraph and discuss the questions in pairs. Nominate one or two Ss for the answers.

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Clarify the meaning of "resolution" and ask some CCQs to elicit the meaning of New year resolutions.( Have you ever promised to do something? Yes. What do we call promises for New Year? Resolutions.) Introduce some useful language on the board to write down resolutions and plans for the future. I hope to + Vinf. I am planning to + Vinf I am thinking of.+Ving Write one example on the board. Ex:I am going to stop smoking. Ask Ss to underline the functional language in the paragraph.

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ask Ss to write down 5 resolutions by using the functional vocabulary they have learned. Ss read out their sentences to each other and talk about their resolutions in pairs. Brainstorm some ideas on the board if needed. Ask Ss to write a short paragraph (their plans for new year celebrations and resolutions about this year.) Ss use the paragraph they read as a model for their own paragraph. Tell them they have ten minutes to write it. - Monitor and help when needed.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ss post their paragraphs on the board. Ss go to the board and read each others' works and then sit down. Do some error correction and give feedback. As a class, they talk about their plans and resolutions. SS vote for the best New Year resolution.
