TP 4 Online Friendships
B1+ (Intermediate) level


In this lesson students practise skills in reading for gist and detail in the context of 'Online Friendships'.


Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about social network in the context of online friendships
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about social network sites in the context of online friendships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of vocabulary relating to social network relationships


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet students Ask Ss what they need to do with this activity and who they will be working with. Hand out gap fill FB - students give answers

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Display the vocabulary elicit from Ss what they understand Group Ss into pairs Display the headline of the article. Display the first question students discuss in pairs and elicit answers Display the second question in pairs and elicit answers Hand out the article and allow 1 minute for students to read. Ss discuss with their partner whether it mentions their ideas

Detailed Reading Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a detailed reading task where studentsecific information reading/listening tasks

Ask: Who is Dr Tyagi? Hand out the detailed reading questions Ask whose views or opinions the article is about and elicit answers Ss read the article Peer check answers Ss read article to carefully find the reasons he gives for his opinions Ss to a peer check and report to the class

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Group students 3 or 4s Hand out personalisation question sheet Students discuss with their groups If time permits - do error correction with the students
