Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of unreal conditional type 2 in the context of ideal world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of ideal world

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to tell the Ss to imagine that they could live in another country. And, I ask them what country they would choose and why. they will pair up and talk to each other.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

They are going to focus on the questionnaire and explain that this is a weekly feature in a newspaper in which famous people are asked some hypothetical questions. Then, they will start to read the questions and match them with they answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask the students to answer four questions which are about the questions in the questionnaire and then we check as a whole class.

Clarification (11-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a picture on the board with a bubble on my head and write the first half and ask the students suggest endings. Then I will ask some CCQs to be sure that they understood the meaning. after that I will elicit the form. To make sure they have understood the meaning and form I will give them a matching task. After matching, first they will check in pairs then I will ask them to check their answers by listening to the audio. Next, to work on the sentence stress I am going to play the audio again and ask them to repeat after. Since I am not a native speaker, this audio exposes them to authentic English.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • to prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give them two controlled practices. In the first controlled practice, they have set of sentences with highlighted phrases and they will try to differentiate between the correct form or ill-form words. If the sentences were wrong, they should rectify them ,and if they were right they must put a check mark, then they will check them in pairs and after the whole class will get the answer key. The next controlled practice will be done on the condition that they do the previous one sooner than the time that is allocated for this stage. Anyway, in this practice they will distinguish between the first conditional (real) and second conditional (unreal) and write the correct form of the verb. This task will help them to understand the difference between real and unreal.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

they will be provided with a hand out that has seven sentence beginnings and start to complete it with own imagination.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

First I will divide the whole class to two groups and give each group set of questions then I will ask them to change the verbs to past to form second unreal. Next, they will stand up and mingle to ask and answer the questions.
