Description

In this lesson, students will practice fluency with past tense trying to solve a murder by using question words.

Abc Clues

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation, solving a crime in the context of Murder

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about the radio cast announcement in the context of the murder

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T- will ask students "What are some question words we use?" (who, what, when,where,why, how) T- will ask students if they have read any mystery books or know of any famous murder cases.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through vocabulary.

Chest HO- Take a look at these words and match them to the correct heading. On the WB T will write some words and try to elicit it from the Ss. Motive: something that causes a person to act in a certain way ex: My motive to writing this is to help you. Scene: a place where an action or event occurs/happens She returned to the scene of the car accident. deserted: empty of people I want to go to a deserted island. FB: WC student will come up to the white board and white answers in columns.

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Past tenses Mr. Arnold was murdered. Subject +verb (past form of be) +verb(past participle) The Past Tense is used to talk about something that started and finished at a definite time in the past. Some words the Ss would not be familiar with: deliberations: de·lib·er·a·tion /dɪˌlɪb əˈreɪ ʃən/- careful thinking before a decision imprisonment: im·pris·on-ment /ɪmˈprɪz ən/- to put someone in jail/prison confided: con·fide /kənˈfaɪd/- to trust accomplice: ac·com·plice /əˈkɒm plɪs/ - a person that helps another in a wrong doing enquiries: en·quir ies /ɛnˈkwaɪər/- request of information or truth

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T- will explain that we are going to solve a murder case. Background: Mr. Arnold was a rich 55 year businessman. He was married to Miss Gregory who is 25 years old. On June 7th Mr. Arnold was found dead at a bus station. Police are investigating the scene of the crime and need some help. Chest HO= There will be 2 separate groups. Group A and B - In pairs with your partner look at these clues and try to figure out WHERE, WHEN AND HOW Mr, Arnold died. Then pairs of 2 will become a group of 4 group of 8 and so on Then the students in each group will come up with the story as to who they think MURDERED Mr.Arnold. Then Group A and group B will share their answers as to Where, When, How and WHO killed him.

Feedback (8-10 minutes) • Gist reading for specific information,

Chest HO- Briefly read this new board cast to to find out WHEN, WHERE, HOW, and WHO killed Mr. Arnold. Students will explain what gave the murder away.
