Description

In the first part of the lesson, students will first focus on the 'Functional Language: Describing People' and have some practice from a recording, the sentence correction and a semi-controlled speaking activity. The second part of the lesson, students will have a freer communicative activity to describe ' the famous faces past & present'. The last part of lesson is followed by a 'Find Your Double' as a further practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and accuracy practice of language used for describing people in the context of physical appearance

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a communication in the context of 'famous faces past & present' and 'find your double'

Procedure

Focus on TL (5-7 minutes) • To practice 'functional language: describing people', considering meaning, form, and pronunciation

Elicit - what we say to describe people's physical appearance. Ss work alone and fill in the gaps to the box of Functional Language. FB - check answers W/C and focus on meaning, form, and pronunciation. Model and drill intonation where necessary.

Controlled Practice 1 (5-6 minutes) • To give Ss controlled practice in the TL in listening

Write 'She's + adjective' and 'She has + noun' on the board. Play the recording of 1.45. Ss listen to the prompt word then make a sentence using 'She's' or 'She has'. Play the recording again if necessary and drill the sentences chorrally and individually.

Controlled Practice 2 (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss controlled practice of the TL in the exercise of the sentence correction for accuracy

Ss in small groups correct the questions and the sentences by adding ONE word/ Set the time for 2-3 minutes. Model the first sentence as an example. Nominate one S from each group to write the correct answer on the w/b, encourage W/C to do peer correction before the teacher shows the answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To give Ss semi-controlled practice for fluency in speaking

Put Ss into A and B pairs.Give students a minute to think of how to describe the person in the class they have chosen. Give Studnet B a minute to prepare the questions. Student B asks Qs to guess who he/she is and Student A describes someone in the class. When student B has guessed the person, they change roles. Monitor - pay attention to problem areas for FB. W/C FB.

Free Practice (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the TL in fluency speaking activity

Lead-in: Write four famous people's names on the w/b and ask Ss what they know about these famous people. Ss work in A and B pairs. Student A and B use different HO2 to describe these famous people in turns. Monitor the W/C in distance and give help if students need it. Collect and note down Ss' errors. FB - ask the W/C what they find out which pictures of the famous people are the same, and which are not. If time - Give error correction.

Follow-up Activity (7-9 minutes) • To review the TL and assess their speaking ability in fluency and accuracy in a task-based activity

Tell Ss that they are going to do a class mingle activity - Find my double. Hand out one card to each student. Remind and encourage the W/C to use ONLY L2 to ask and answer each other. They may sit down when they find their identical partner. Take some general FB W/C.
