Materials

Abc Gap-fill handout 1
Abc Gap-fill handout 2

Main Aims

  • For the students to review and practise 'there is' and 'there are' through grammar exercises in the context of 'towns'.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking for accuracy through a controlled speaking activity.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • Elicit the rule from the sts

*Ask them to tell me what they see in the classroom. Write 'There is' and 'There are' on the WB. Write the items that they see under these two columns, asking them where to write them. *Elicit 'singular' and 'plural' from the sts. *Elicit the rule from sts that we use 'there is' for singular and 'there are' for plural forms.

Grammar Exercises (25 minutes) • For students to comprehend the use of 'there is/there are' and practise pronounciation

*Give the handout to the sts. Do the first sentence with them before they start the first exercise. They work in pairs and do the fill in the gaps exercise. They check the concept of the sentences (e.g. positive, negative, questions, short answers) and the form (singular or plural) and fill the gaps with 's, is, are and isn't. *Monitor the sts, help if needed. *Check the answers with the whole classroom. *Tell sts to do the next exercise. They work in pairs. Do the first question with all of them as an example. They fill in the gaps according to the noun and the sign next to each sentence (a tick or a cross). *Monitor the sts, help if needed. *Check the answers with the whole classroom. Do drilling during the stage, especially drill 'there's'. *Give the second handout to the sts. They work in pairs. Do the first one with them. They complete the questions with 'are there' or 'is there'. *Monitor the sts, help if needed. *Check the answers with the whole classroom. *Sts put 'yes' or 'no' thinking about the places near their home and checking the questions in the 'me' column. *Monitor the sts, help if needed.

Speaking (10 minutes) • For sts to personalize what they have learnt from the lesson and do controlled and also freer speaking.

*Sts work in pairs. They take turns to ask and answer the questions given before. For each question they put a 'yes' or 'no' in the 'my partner' column. Do the first one with them. They give more information about each question to personalize what they have been learning. *Monitor the sts, check if they spell 'there's' correctly. *Do error correction later on if needed.
