Main Aims

  • To provide listening for gist and specific information practice using a text about communication in the context of social media
  • To provide accurate pronunciation of expressions that communicate opinions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write Communication on the WB. Stick picture on WB. How do you communicate with your family and friends? Write as many ways as you can. 1 minute Now ask your partner. How will you ask them? Elicit question form from Ss.2 minutes FB-Ask Ss how their partner communicates with family and friends. In groups discuss which methods of communication you prefer and why? 3 minutes. Early finishers can discuss pros and cons of each method.

Exposure (0-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduce characters from listening activity to Ss. Elicit where characters are from. Listen to the two conversations and answer the questions. Show Handout. Listen to the recording and complete Exercise 1. Play recording 1.10 Discuss your answers with your partner. CHANGE PARTNERS AROUND. Ask Ss ideas during WC FB.

Highlighting (0-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

There are some words and expressions in the recordings. that might be difficult to understand. Here are some of the expressions from the recordings and their meanings. What is your task? There is one word that has no definition. Find the word and create your own definition. Ss get into groups or pairs depending on numbers and match the expressions to the meanings. 3 minutes. Ask some groups what word was missing and their definition. What do I use when I’m sleeping? Pillow If something is a waste of time, is it productive? No Have I met my virtual friend in real life? No How do I communicate with my virtual friend? Online Is addictive a good or a bad thing? Bad If Facebook is addictive do I want to check it every day? Yes Drill words Write 'I'd say it must be impossible to relax, though' on WB. Listen to 1.12 and write down the words that are stressed in the sentence. (If time is running short, say the sentence instead of playing recording) Play recording Ask S to come to the board and write the stress. Drill the sentence as S writes it. Is it correct? If incorrect, correct errors. We stress the words in a sentence that carry meaning, such as nouns and verbs. Look at sentences 2-4. In partners say the words out loud to each other and mark the words that you think are stressed. 2 minutes Listen to recording 1.12 to check your answers. Go through each answer and drill pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (0-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss read the sentences and answer true or false. Play recording 1.10. Ss check their answers in PW. WC FB How do you feel about networking sites? Do you think it is beneficial to be in constant mobile contact with colleagues, friends and family? Discuss the questions in small groups. 3 minutes. Extra questions for early finishers. Did you get any interesting answers?

Semi-Controlled Practice (0-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target language in a semi-controlled way.

Ss look at sentences from the conversation and write down who says 1-6. Give Ss a copy of the tapescript. Read the text and check your answers with a partner. Ss look at the highlight expressions and answer the questions. Ss will come up to the WB and stick the expressions in the speaker's opinion column or the other people's opinions column Ss will check their answers and see if they agree. Ss answer questions 2a b and c in pairs. Check answers in groups.

Free Practice (0-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Using mobile phones on public transport is impolite. You should only have children if you're married What do you think about this? Use the highlighted expressions to model your sentences. Ss write their opinions down. 2 minutes In groups give your opinions about this statement and find out if others agree or disagree. 4 minutes
