Main Aims

  • To practice speaking for accuracy with target language and fluency in context of favorite city/town.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of lexis and introduce sentence structure through a short writing exercise in context of sts favorite place.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start lesson with a quick review of names. Then tell sts that there are 3 things to cover; 1)an activity to practice speaking and using target language and contractions. 2). Write to practice using new vocabulary and 3) Speaking in context of favorite places by localizing to neighborhood.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

This activity tests usage of the target language grammar. Sts practice speaking with accuracy by confirming correct usage of singular, plural and negative in WHAT DO YOU SEE? (in box 1,2,3 activity). Contractions are introduced (by modeling sentence on fingers for word count) for practice for speaking fluency. Drilling works to clarify pronunciation of contractions and reinforces listening for pronunciation.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Sts practice writing correct grammatical sentences through a controlled Fill in Gap HO writing exercise. Additional localized vocabulary has been added to assist students in speaking with fluency about something more personal and familiar, their neighborhoods.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Sts work in pairs to write up (if necessary) and then discuss WHAT DO YOU SEE in their neighborhoods. Teacher monitors to keep students motivated on task and assists with questions and clarification of vocabulary.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Sts move to open discussion where peer correction can offer feedback. Sts will be encouraged to share with class WHAT DO YOU SEE at another sts neighborhood or favorite place.
