Description

In this lesson, the students will focus on listening to an interview about giving and receiving gifts to foreigners. The sts will practice both receptive (listening) and productive skills (speaking).

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening and specific information listening practice using audio clips in the context of giving and receiving presents.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice speaking in the context of presents and giving tips.

Procedure

Introduction/ warm-up (Freer speaking practice) (8-10 minutes) • Set the context of the lesson

Begin the intro/warm-up by checking the sts understanding of "presents" and "gifts". Bring a box of a present. "What is this?" To elicit the answer "present=gift". I will also try to elicit "receive" and "give" in the same context. Put sts in groups of 4/5. Have the sts talk about these Qs: "What was the last present you gave?" "Who did you give it to and why?"/ "What was the last present you received?" "Who was it from, and why?". Ask the sts to share an interesting answer from each group with the WC.

Pre-teach vocabulary (meaning,form,pronunciation) (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening task and make it accessible

Put pictures on the WB and elicit the vocabulary. focus on the plural form of "knife" and knives". Do some drilling with focus on stress.

Pre-listeing (5-7 minutes) • Practice listening for general topics (Gist)

Explain the context (what will the sts be listening to?): "Today we will do some listening and speaking activities about presents." Give the "Gist Listening" HO. (allow the students a minute to read over the topics). "Put the TOPICS (main ideas) IN ORDER". (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) Play audio sample. Have the sts check their answers in pairs. After that tell the students to check whats under their desks (answer key).

While-listening (6-7 minutes) • Practice listening for specific information

Give the sts "Choose the correct words/phrases" HO. Allow them a few minutes to read over the sentences. Explain that the sts need to listen to the audio clip again, this time focusing on specific information. They need to listen CAREFULLY (read #1 aloud to the sts, they are listening for "should" or "shouldn't"- circle the correct answer). *The sts may need to hear it again,* Have the sts check their answers in pairs. Then with the WC. *Ask sts which facts from the interview they found to be surprising or unusual* *Is the part about giving flowers in Turkey true or false?

Post-listening (freer practice) (10-12 minutes) • To encourage students to us TL in speaking

Write two examples of should and shouldn't on the WB and elicit that it's used here to give tips. Quick drilling. Put sts in groups of four/five. Ask the sts to talk about how to behave in your country using these ideas: "giving and receiving presents", "meeting and greeting people" and "what(not) to wear in different situations. Give them example: *You must refuse a present three times before you accept it. *When you meet a friend you should kiss them on both cheeks. Finally ask sts to share an interesting ideas with the class.
