The matching exercise will be focusing on the new question words and their meaning. The students will be practicing speaking for accuracy and fluency with semi-controlled and freer exercises by asking questions in pairs.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of question words in the context of quiz and conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a quiz and conversation
  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for asking question

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the lesson asking the students if they like games and TV shows. After watching a small video of "Who wants to be a millionaire" and ask if they know this program and what it is about. I will try to make them elicit the word "questions".

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a game

In relation to the game we just talked about, I will organize a quiz: "Who wants to eat a chocolate" The students will be split into 3 teams. I will act as the presenter and ask 8 questions about the USA or Turkey using different question words. Students will have to answer in teams within 20 to 30 seconds by writing the answer on the WB. The FB will be done directly after each question. By the end, they will all get some chocolates.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will draw students attention on the question words of the previous exercise and them to give me those so that I can write it down on the whiteboard.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In order to help the students discover the meaning of those words, they will have to do a matching exercise. During the FB, I will give them examples to help them understand the meaning. We will then be focusing on the form. I will ask them in a sentence where the question word is, then the verb, then the subject and the object. I will give them 2-3 examples of questions with Wh- + verb + subject and Wh + verb + object. Who is Mesut (subject)? Mesut is my friend Who (subject) does like Mesut (object)? I like Mesut Where is Mesut? Mesut is in the class Then we will be working on the pronunciation with some drilling.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

First, I will separate the class into 2 groups with colored paper. I will show the HO and the exercise to the students. We will be doing the first sentence together as a demo. Then they will be working on their own first to find which question word is corresponding to the question. After checking the answers, the students will have to stand up and ask questions to a member of the other group. I will be monitoring to spot some incorrect pronunciation and use it for FB by doing some more drilling.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will have to form on their own questions with the question words first. I will make an example with a student first. When monitoring, I will help the students with some vocabulary and check if the questions are correct. Then they will mingle and ask those questions. For the FB after monitoring to spot and correct some eventual mistakes.
