Description

In this lesson, students will learn vocabulary about relationships and marriage and practice Simple Past Tense. They will also practice some irregular verbs through talking, read the passages in the handout, listen and repeat the related section from the book (Section 10), do the classroom activities individually, in pairs, in groups or as a whole class and have fun.

Materials

Abc Handout (fotocopy)
Abc Cards that have names of some celebrities on (more or less 20 cards are needed)

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and review of Simple Past Tense in the context of celebrities, marriage and divorce.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary about relationships in the context of celebrities, marriage and divorce.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Talking about celebrities in Turkey who are married/divorced and the details about these relationships; when they got married, when they got divorced, whether or not they have children, why they got divorced etc..

Exposure (7-9 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Showing the pictures of the celebrities' who are in the handout and asking the students questions about them like if they know them or any movies they acted in. Clarification of the vocabulary that they might not know. (Reading 1 in the handout)

Task 1 (9-11 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Cards are put at the backs of the students and they have to mill around the classroom asking questions to find out who they are. They can't ask questions like "Who am I?" or "What is my name?". Before they start, they are given instructions to use Simple Present Tense question forms.

Task 2 (5-7 minutes) • Reading for the important information

Students work together to find the answers to the questions and report back to the class. To encourage them to scan the text for only the information that they need to answer the questions, a time limit can be imposed and the activity can be made as a race among the pairs. (Reading 2 in the handout)

Task 3 (5-7 minutes) • Detailed reading

Students read the information more carefully and answer the questions in the activity 3 of the handout. (Reading 3 in the handout)

Task 4 (9-11 minutes) • Scan reading

Students try to complete the sentences without looking at the text as much as they can. Check the answers with the class. Divide the class into two groups and let them discuss the sentences they don't agree on. (Lexis 1 in the handout) And then, they will discuss on the answers. (Lexis 2 in the handout)
