Description

This lesson is reading and listening skills lesson. In the reading section students needs to find out specific information about The Tate modern and the Listening part is about asking for directions at the information desk of an art gallery. There will also be a review on ordinal numbers and drilling for pronunciation.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in listening for gist and specific information about finding directions in public places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to develop their reading skills through a reading about the Tate Modern.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell Ss they are going to draw a picture. Give them A4 sheet and pens Tell them that they can be as creative as they like. "you have 2 minutes" Ask students to attach their art works on to the nearest wall. Teacher chooses a picture and describes it like an art critic. e.g. " It's blue and yellow, there are lovely trees and animals, it is very interesting, it is lovely, I like it" Tell students to work in groups of 3 to describe a picture. Monitor Nominate for feedback.

Gist reading (4-4 minutes) • To help students focus on a general understanding of the text.

Power point some images of Tate Modern. Ask students to describe the images: "What sort of building is this?, What can you see there?, would you like to go there? Before handing out the text ask the question " What is Tate Modern?" Ss read the text and work in pair. Check the answer in pairs. T: Monitor. W/C feedback

Reading for specific information (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task.

Ask Ss to read these two questions: 1)Where is Tate Modern? 2) What do people see there? Ask Ss to read the text again and answer the questions. Students work in pairs for comparing answers. - Monitor. Nominate Ss for feedback

Follow up speaking task (5-5 minutes) • To allow Ss to give their opinion and practise their speaking skills

Ss work in group of 3 or in pairs Ask Ss to discuss these questions: 1) Do you like modern art? 2) Discuss an interesting art museum you have seen? (ICQ) Allow students to practice. Monitor Nominate 2-3 Ss for feedback

Pre- teach vocabulary (if needed) (5-6 minutes) • To enable students to better understand and use ordinal numbers.

Describe the Tate Modern has many floors. Say, they are not call floor 1,2,3 etc." What do you call them?" Elicit answers from students. Students work individually With the hand out Ss matche the words to the ordinal numbers. Pair check. Monitor W/C feedback Floor1 is?, Floor 2 is? Pronunciation- coral and individual drilling. Show the diagram to the SS with the words - Members' room, exhibition etc... Ask Ss to repeat after you the names of the places. Then model the task, say "What floor is the cafe on? Ss to answer "It's on the second floor." W/C drill answer.

Pre- listening task (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with practice to identify some of the symbols that we use in public places.

Ask Ss to work in pairs. Ask them to match words to symbols. Give Ss HO - Monitor T: read each word out loud modelling- individually then W/C drilling Pair work to compare the answers Nominate for Feedback

Listening task (5-8 minutes) • To enable students to develop their listening skills for scanning.

Before the task ask warm up questions e.g. "You are visiting Tate Modern and go to the information desk, "What questions do you ask?" Elicit for example: "where are the toilets? What floor is the cafe on? Ss will listen listen to a recording 1.55 Ask Ss to listen to the recording and tick the words from exercise1 you hear. Ss work in pair to compare their answers. Monitor Check with W/C

Listening for specific information (8-10 minutes) • To enable students to develop their skills for finding specific information in the text

Ask Ss to read out the sentences on exercise 4 first, listen to the tape again to match each sentence to a place in exercise1. Answer key: 1) public telephone, 2) public telephone, 3)men's toilets,4) Baby changing rooms 5) lift 6) cafe
