Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the past simple form of to be through guided discovery based on a reading text about film remakes. The lesson starts with a discussion about films, showing some pictures on the WB. Gist reading follows this, with an exercise where students relate pictures to paragraphs in a text about remakes. They will be asked to fill-in gaps in the next exercise in order to scan the text and introduce the grammatical topic. After explaining the past simple form of to be, students will practise this new form with listening and writing exercises.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the past simple form of to be in the context of films and remakes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of films and rem
  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about films and remakes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After giving them the topic of the day, I will ask the students what they think about films, if they prefer American ones or Turkish ones. I will ask them to give me some examples and maybe give the name of a famous Turkish film? Then, I will show them a slide with pictures of different movies related to the lesson. Students will tell me if they know those movies and what is the difference between the movies (original and remake of King Kong for example). If the students know the films, I will write it down on the WB, otherwise I will tell them and explain some vocabulary: difference between original films and remakes using the dates. I will ask students if they like remakes. The whole class will be repeating the answer so that they get the correct pronunciation.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Next, students will discover a text about remakes on the WB, corresponding to pictures of films. They will have to gist the text in order to match the pictures with the right paragraphs. I will use some ICQ’s and a demo so that students understand the activity. As a FB, I will ask some students in the class (maybe early finishers) to write down the answers on the WB. We will check together the answers. As a scanning exercise, students will have to fill-in the gaps in sentences about the text. I will use ICQ’s to check their understanding. They will be checking their answers in pairs and then we will do the FB on the WB with the WC.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Using the previous exercise, I will then ask the students to focus on the verbs in these sentences by circling those and try to make them elicit the form (past simple) and the corresponding verb.

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline and a tab with past and present. First student will give me the present simple form of be, then they will give me the past simple form. They will be eliciting the negative and question forms as well so that I can write it down on the WB. I will be doing some CCQ's to be sure they understand the form and the meaning.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will be listening to a recording with some sentences in the present simple form. The students will have to make the sentences they heard with the past simple form. If they can't find the sentence, I will write it down on the WB. We will be doing some whole class drilling to get the correct pronunciation.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will practice some more past form with semi-controlled exercise, where they have to fill-in the gaps in a text about films and TV programs. They will be working on their own and check the answers with their partner. During the FB, we will be doing some more drilling.

If time / Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will be asking questions to each other about yesterday using the past form. Students will stand up and mingle within the classroom.
