Teaching Practice 5 Ozgur
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, the sts will learn how to use there is/are. We start with an exercise that explains the target language in positive/negative/question forms for both singular and plural uses. Then they get a lot of controlled exercises to get better at it. They learn how to use contractions as well. They do a pair discussion to practice further. The lesson ends with a series of activities about a town which will enhance there vocabulary and their ability to use the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of there is / are in the context of town descriptions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice for correct pronunciation of the TL

Procedure

Introducing Grammar (7-9 minutes) • To check if they have any knowledge of the TL and explain if necessary

The sts will be given instructions and then the HOs. I want to see if they can complete the exercise on their own and I will not give any information at the start and will be watching very closely to monitor their progress. I will project the exercise on the WB and let them have a peer check before we go over the answers. Two points I will be looking out for are the use of "any" in plural negatives and questions and the contraction of "there's". I will clarify whatever problems they have before proceeding to the next exercise.

Controlled Exercise (6-8 minutes) • To further practice the target language and work on the correct pronunciation

I will start by explaining that a "check sign" means a positive sentence and a "cross" means a negative sentence. Then the sts do the exercise 8 on their own and then we listen to the answers. I will do some drilling here and see if they can correctly pronunce "there's" and "there are". Some extra drilling may be required if they have problems.

Listening (5-6 minutes) • To practice intonation and sentence stress when asking questions with the TL

First I give instructions for the next exercise and give the HOs. The sts do the exercise 9a. Then we listen to the answers and work on the stress and intonation structure of the questions. I will try to use hand gestures to show them how to correctly ask the question and put the stress where it belongs.

Speaking (7-8 minutes) • To practice speaking using the TL

The sts quickly do the exercise 9c. Then I demo a question from 9d in class and tell them to work in pairs and and talk to each other and write down their partners' answers while I monitor them do see if any problems are evident. I will work on those in class before moving on, if necessary.

Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To learn new vocabulary related to towns

The sts will be given the Wkbook exercise and will match words with the numbered places on the picture. They should already know all the words but if they have some problems witth the newly acquired vocabulary, I will work on those.

Controlled Exercise 2 (7-8 minutes) • To further practice the target language

The sts will first be given instructions for the next exercise and then I will distribute the HO. They will work on the exercise on their own. I will be monitoring them to see if they still have any problems at this stage. They will do a peer check and we go over the answers.
