Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To introduce the passive voice

I will start with writing two active and a passive sentences on the board that will go along with the warm up handout and ask them which sentence seems more active? After getting an answer I will line draw the differences between the two sentences in terms of structure.

Grammar exercise 1 - Gist (2-5 minutes) • Skimming for gist

The students will be told to read ex 1 and answer the question: what is the difference in rhetoric between ancient Greece and nowadays? answer: nowadays, rhetoric is no longer widely taught. peer review.

Grammar exercise 1 - Scanning (5-10 minutes) • To Identify the passive form

The students will be given the HO and told to look at exercise 1, which instructions them to id the passive form in each sentence. I will have some students come to the board to write the answer.

Grammar exercise 3 (5-10 minutes) • Show the rules for passive voice

I will have students work on ex 3 which asks them to complete the rules about using passive voice. I will then nominate students for FB answers.

Grammar exercise 2 - Gist (2-5 minutes) • Skimming for gist

I will have the students skim the first paragraph in ex 2 and ask them will famous person they are referring to.

Grammar exercise 2 (10-15 minutes) • Change the lines to passive voice

In ex 2 of the HO, the students will be given four paragraphs and told to change the italics to passive voice.

Freer practice (10-15 minutes) • Freer practice, speaking

I have the students get in groups of three and have them pick a famous person in which to describe in the passive voice. Once they have thought of someone I will switch the teams so they can quiz the group members of that person. I will model an example first.
