Main Aims

  • To help students improve listening and speaking skills in the context of following parts of a British soap opera.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To be able to speak about a specific topic, this time a British soap opera, its characters and events that unfold, which will also recap vocabulary introduced in previous lessons.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and ground students to the listening and tasks they will be doing.

- Start with showing students picture of a Turkish soap opera (Gullerin Savasi) depicting the three main characters. Ask them to give the real names and then the names they use in the show to explain the word "character." Ask sts to identify what they think are some of the characters' traits, to reuse vocabulary from previous class. Move on to Family Business, and briefly review characters to lead in to the present class' recording.

Listening task 1 (8-10 minutes) • To have students listen and draw meaning from recording

I will go over the task and explain to sts that they need to answer the three questions on HO. This task will help them get a general idea of the recording. I will ICQ to check whether they have a general understanding of what is requested through the questions. I may ask -if they know who the characters are to tie in to question 2. -about what Lydia's concern is for question 3. Sts will receive the HO, look at the questions Sts will hear the recording. Sts will write response to questions and check answers in pairs. Teacher will then elicit questions to ensure understanding

While-Listening task 2 (8-10 minutes) • To have students listen to recording for a more in-depth understanding

Have sts turn HO over for list of true and false questions. Ask them to look over the questions so they get a feel for what they are expected to look out for in the task. Have them listen to recording and answer questions. Check answers by having them pair up with every other classmate. After they check each other, we have feedback with answers on the WB. We may relisten to see if there are many discrepancies in answers.

Speaking (6-8 minutes) • Students will be able to discuss what they gathered and predict what is to come within contex of the recording

Students will be grouped into 3 and be told to talk about what they think might happen in the show next. Prompt the students to talk in TL to come up with the ideas. Have a secretary to jot down 2 ideas for each group. They will then have a spokesperson share these ideas with the WC.

Listening and speaking (8-10 minutes) • Students will listen to recording and use their understanding as a base to converse

Sts' attention will be directed to what actually happens at the end of the episode, after having gone over their own ideas. Have sts listen to recording. Converse to see if their ideas did/didn't happen. Give out HO2, have students look over to see if they understand the questions. Listen to recording again. To have them answer to each other, have students mingle and ask each other the questions, to converse about what they just listened to.
