Pre-Intermediate A2 level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn to form and use superlatives. During the first whole class activity, they will be watching 2 opposite pictures and will have to give me the correct form. Then, they will be explained the rules to form superlatives. I will also be focusing on the students' pronunciation with a drilling exercise during a listening activity. The next activity will be a team race where students will have to find comparative and superlative forms for different adjectives. Finally, they will be working individually on a fill-in gaps exercise.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of superlatives and comparatives in the context of roles people play

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy
  • To provide accuracy in speaking and writing

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As an introduction, I will ask one student to stand beside me. I will write the sentence "Jonathan is the ... of us" and ask them to

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for superlatives through some pictures

I will show different slides with pictures and a key word and ask students to give me the correct superlative. I might be doing some drilling already since it is a whole class activity.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the form and pronunciation of superlatives

First, I will ask the students to read the text and answer questions to exercise 5a. Using tables on the whiteboard, I will make the students discover the rule by themselves by showing them how many syllables there are in each word and ask them to give me the superlative form. I will also give them some other clues and expose them to exceptions.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the pronunciation

I will be playing a recording from Face2Face and ask students to drill the sentences they hear. I will ask some of them to repeat it individually in order to check their accuracy.

Controlled Practice (12-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In order to make grammar funnier, I will set a game. I will organize the class into 3 teams and tell them it is a race. They will have to find superlatives and comparative forms of adjectives one after another. I give the first ones a strip with an adjective. As soon as he finishes, he gives the pen to another member of his team. The activity goes on until all the adjectives are used. We correct the answers during the FB and declare the winner.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further

For the last activity, I ask each student to do the exercise 8 on the HO. They check their answers with their partner and the first ones to finish come to the WB to write down the answers. To conclude, I ask them to fill in the sentence: "This class was the ........ in my life.
